The wildfires ravaging Spain and France stem from an exceptionally hot and dry summer across Western Europe, where record-breaking heat waves and parched conditions have created ample fuel for ignition.
While attributing any individual fire to climate change remains challenging, scientists note that the scorching temperatures affecting Spain and France last month were amplified by fossil‑fuel emissions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned in 2021 that fire‑prone conditions are likely to grow more frequent across the Mediterranean throughout this century.
Generally, wildfires thrive in hot, dry environments that deprive vegetation of moisture, enabling flames to spread rapidly once ignited.
“We are witnessing the drying out of Europe,” remarked Johann Georg Goldammer, director of the Global Fire Monitoring Center in Freiburg, Germany. “Vegetation is under heat and drought stress, and the effect is building up.”
He emphasized on Saturday that the wildfires are directly linked to the preceding extreme weather.
In western France, crews have been fighting fires in a region that previously experienced intense heat waves. Bordeaux, where thousands have evacuated from suburbs, endured its hottest recorded spell in late June, with temperatures hitting 42 °C (107.6 °F) for three consecutive days.
Since June 1, Bordeaux has logged 20 days with highs of at least 35 °C (95 °F), up from just five during the same period last year. Rainfall has been scarce—only three days, each delivering minimal precipitation.
Copernicus, the EU’s climate monitoring service, declared that Western Europe endured its hottest June on record, noting widespread dry spells and soil moisture far below average in both Spain and France.
Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, warned that the combination of heat waves and warm European waters is creating increasing risks for populations, ecosystems, and infrastructure.
Consequently, across Europe—the continent warming fastest—these risks are manifesting in various forms. The Danube River recently fell to its lowest level in three decades, hindering shipping; low Rhine levels this month have compelled cargo vessels to reduce loads; the Netherlands has declared a water shortage, and much of France is under water restrictions.
Finally, the wildfires themselves compound the challenges.
The European Forest Fire Information System reports that France has experienced its highest number of fires and greatest burned area in the past two decades. Historically, from 2006 to 2015, the country averaged about 15 fires per year; this year it has already logged 312 fires, scorching over 70,000 hectares, with the summer season still underway.
Spain endured one of its severest fire seasons in recent memory last year; this year’s damage amounts to about 40 % of that total. Typically, European wildfire danger peaks in mid‑July and August.
In 2021, the European Environment Agency noted that the Mediterranean’s average annual burned area has edged down since the 1980s thanks to better fire‑management practices. However, the agency also warned that fires are now occurring in central and northern European regions that historically rarely experience them.
