Last year, Hangman Page faced off and defeated Will Ospreay in the final of the 2025 Owen Hart Foundation Cup.
Following the tournament win, Page faced Jon Moxley at All In 2025, where he defeated him to win the AEW World title. Recently speaking to Ariel Helwani, Ospreay opened up on the possible reasons behind why company President Tony Khan chose Page over him for the cup win.
“I think there was talks about it last year when it was myself and Hangman [Page] going for the Owen [Hart Foundation Cup], and Tony [Khan], I don’t think, knew which one he wanted to go with.
“All signs were great for both of us. It was Hangman’s time or the rise of me. And when it was time to make the decision and Tony decided Hangman, it was kind of like, okay, well… I’m not ready for the world title yet. So it’s one of those things where, okay, we’ll have to build up to it,” Ospreay added.
Despite both Ospreay and Page being top favorites for the spot, Khan ultimately chose Page for the position, while Ospreay teamed up with Swerve Strickland to face The Young Bucks. Unfortunately, following the conclusion of the PPV, Ospreay announced his neck injury and went on a hiatus before returning to action at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
“And in a weird way, it’s a good thing that I wasn’t put in that position to go after the world title, because I probably would have had to vacate it the next day,” he finished.
Almost a year later, Ospreay again made his way to the 2026 Owen Hart Cup final, where he defeated Strickland to earn himself a World title opportunity at All In 2026.
