Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are reuniting for 215, a scripted series that dramatizes their struggle to escape West Philadelphia and bring hip-hop to the world stage.

Set in late-Eighties West Philadelphia, the series follows a quick-witted teenage rapper, his DJ counterpart, and the friends who fuel their dream. Together they pursue a record deal, money, and an escape route as the city’s hip-hop scene explodes, navigating label meetings, hometown loyalty, sudden fame, and friendships that hold—or nearly break—them.

Smith’s Westbrook Studios and the Malar Group are developing the project. “Westbrook has always been focused on developing stories with strong characters, distinctive worlds, and a clear point of view,” said Terence Carter, Westbrook’s president of television. “215 is especially meaningful to us because it draws from the rise of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince and celebrates Philadelphia during such a defining era in the city’s late-Eighties/early-Nineties hip-hop scene.”

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince released their debut single, “Girls Ain’t Nothing but Trouble,” in 1986, followed months later by the album Rock the House. Their 1988 sophomore release, He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper, earned triple-platinum certification thanks to “Parents Just Don’t Understand” and “A Nightmare on My Street.” The duo issued three more hit albums, the final one being Code Red in 1993, well after Smith became a megastar through NBC’s The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which debuted in 1990.

Even after Smith ascended to film stardom and launched a solo music career, the pair remained close friends, reuniting periodically—the most recent occasion being their joint appearance during the Grammys’ “Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop” in 2023.
