Williams Secure Major Boost as FW48 Hits F1 Minimum Weight at Baku

Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe believes Williams’ achievement of Formula 1’s minimum weight limit will deliver “free lap time” for the Grove outfit at this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Williams has brought a heavily updated FW48 to Baku, addressing the overweight issues that have plagued the car since the season’s opening.

During a recent F1 Nation podcast, Hinchcliffe explained how shedding excess weight will influence overall performance.

“It’s free lap time. It requires no set‑up changes. It requires no driving ability. It is quite literally like horsepower. It’s just free lap time, so it is absolutely vital,” Hinchcliffe explained.

He emphasized that this improvement is crucial, noting that many competitors—including Red Bull, which began the season heavier—have also benefited from shedding weight.

While the upgrades should theoretically elevate Williams’ grid position, team principal James Vowles tempered expectations ahead of the weekend.

“We’ve faced a difficult season and will continue to struggle through the remainder of the year,” Vowles said on The Fast And The Curious podcast.

He added that many mistakes made during the winter will linger until year‑end, but the team aims to recover enough to be competitive again when they debut next year’s car.

Progress will be incremental, however it won’t reach the bare minimum of where he’d like to be—scoring points on a weekend.

The current reality is that the team is not yet where it wants to be. For next year, however, Vowles expects a grid‑position improvement; slipping backward is unlikely. Despite the forward move, it will remain a tough slog.
