The Winnipeg Jets have escalated their situation with Connor Hellebuyck, suspending the veteran goaltender after he failed to report to training camp.
The team announced the suspension Wednesday.
Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is expected to speak with media Thursday, Sept. 17, and provide further detail on the decision.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Hellebuyck had already informed the Jets that he did not intend to attend training camp.
On Aug. 27, Hellebuyck used his agent’s X account to make his trade request public.
“With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request,” Hellebuyck said in the statement. “My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.”
Cheveldayoff responded later that day through the team’s X account.
“Connor has been open with us about his desire for a change,” Cheveldayoff wrote. “He has been an important part of the Winnipeg Jets organization for many years, and we have tremendous respect for what he has accomplished here.”
Hellebuyck has established himself as one of the NHL’s most dominant goaltenders, winning three Vezina Trophies, a Hart Trophy and an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Selected by Winnipeg in the fifth round of the 2012 NHL Draft, Hellebuyck has spent all 11 seasons of his career with the Jets. The club reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in seven of those seasons, with its deepest run coming in 2017-18, when it advanced to the Western Conference Final before falling to the Vegas Golden Knights in five games.
