Wisconsin Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany swam to safety after the small plane he was traveling in made an emergency landing on Lake Wausau late Saturday, he confirmed in a social media post.
Tiffany said the aircraft was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when it lost power while approaching the Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot executed an emergency landing on the lake, and both men ended up in the water.
“After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat,” Tiffany wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Emergency crews transported both Tiffany and the unidentified pilot to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and later released.
A U.S. House veteran representing Wisconsin’s 5th Congressional District since 2021, Tiffany is currently running for governor on the Republican ticket and has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. The aircraft was a single-engine, four-seat Beechcraft Bonanza.
