U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in St. Petersburg on Wednesday for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.
Kirill Dmitriev, Russia’s special envoy, is slated to participate in the discussions and was expected to greet Witkoff upon his arrival at the airport.
The trip follows Witkoff’s visit to Norway, where he held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the Kyiv meeting as “positive,” noting there was “nothing unexpected” or “surprising” in the discussions.
“He will now, armed with those ideas, be able to go to St. Petersburg and share them with the Russian side, and let’s see if we can make some progress,” Rubio told reporters in Mumbai during a two-day visit to India.
