A Wizz Air flight traveling from the United Kingdom to Bulgaria diverted to Hungary on Monday after a bomb threat was made, the airline confirmed.
The aircraft departed from London Luton Airport bound for Sofia, Bulgaria, when the threat was received.
“Wizz Air confirms that today’s London Luton–Sofia flight was diverted to Budapest following a bomb threat received during the flight,” the Hungary‑based carrier said in a statement to Euronews.
“The aircraft diverted and landed safely at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport in accordance with security protocols. It then taxied to a designated stand where authorities performed necessary checks on the aircraft and passengers,” the airline added.
The carrier emphasized that it is cooperating with authorities and that “the safety of passengers and crew remains our highest priority.”
A Hungarian Gripen fighter jet was scrambled to escort the diverted aircraft back to Budapest, Hungarian Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin‑Szendi reported on social media. The jet later returned to its base in Kecskemét, and police have taken charge of the situation.
Flight data from Flightradar24 indicated the plane was over Bosnia and Herzegovina when it changed course toward Hungary.
