The Greek Coast Guard announced on Monday the rescue of a 44-year-old woman who spent 20 hours in the Ionian Sea after jumping from a cruise ship.

The incident occurred Friday morning while the Royal Caribbean vessel Odyssey of the Seas was sailing southwest of Zakynthos. According to a Coast Guard spokesperson speaking to AFP, the woman, a national of El Salvador, stated she had jumped because “she wanted to disembark.”

Search operations located an overturned lifebuoy initially. In the early hours of Sunday, the cargo ship MSC Rossella III, flying the flag of Madeira, discovered the woman conscious and clinging to the buoy. A Coast Guard patrol vessel subsequently retrieved her; she received first aid before being transported to a hospital for further evaluation.
