How To Play Wordle
Wordle is a daily word‑puzzle game where you try to guess a hidden five‑letter word in six attempts or fewer. After each guess the game gives feedback:
- Green: The letter is in the word and in the correct position.
- Yellow: The letter is in the word but in the wrong position.
- Gray: The letter is not in the word at all.
Use these clues to narrow down your guesses. Each day brings a new word that players worldwide attempt to solve. Some also play Competitive Wordle against friends, family, the Wordle Bot, or even me. See the Competitive Wordle rules toward the end of this post.

BEAST was not an ideal opener today, leaving me with 251 possible words and a lone yellow “A.” Trying CHOIR reduced the list to six, which was still far from the solution. Fortunately, CANDY narrowed it down to just one word: CANAL, giving me the win.

I earn 0 points for guessing in four and –1 for losing to the Bot (–2 for 2XP Friday). The Bot scores 1 point for guessing in three and 1 point for beating me (4 points for 2XP Friday).

How To Play Competitive Wordle
- Guessing in 1 earns 3 points; in 2 earns 2 points; in 3 earns 1 point; in 4 earns 0 points; in 5 earns –1 point; in 6 earns –2 points; missing the word earns –3 points.
- If you beat your opponent you gain 1 point; a tie yields 0 points; losing gives –1 point. Add these to get your total score. Keep a running total or reset each day.
- Fridays are 2XP, meaning all points—positive or negative—are doubled.
- You can maintain a cumulative tally or play day‑by‑day. Enjoy!

The word “canal” derives from Latin canalis, meaning “pipe,” “channel,” or “groove,” from canna (“reed”). It entered English through French and Italian to denote an artificial waterway or any channel‑like passage.
