“Nifty” entered American English in the 19th century with meanings such as “stylish,” “clever,” and “excellent.” Its precise origin is uncertain, though it may be connected to earlier slang uses of “nift” or “nifty” to describe something smart or attractive. The word’s deeper history remains unknown.

How Competitive Wordle Scoring Works
- Solving a puzzle in one guess earns 3 points, in two guesses earns 2 points, in three guesses earns 1 point, and in four guesses earns 0 points. A five- or six-guess solution earns -1 or -2 points, respectively, while failing to solve it earns -3 points.
- Beating an opponent earns 1 point, a tie earns 0 points, and losing earns -1 point. Add these results to your total, either for a new daily score or an ongoing series.
- Friday scores are doubled, whether positive or negative.
- You can maintain a running tally or record each game separately.
