New York Yankees three-time most valuable player, and seven-time All Star, Aaron Judge, remains sidelined while dealing with a stress fracture on the first rib of his right side.
Most teams can withstand a an injury to a major team contributor. Most players can be replaced.
But this is Aaron Judge.
When the injury was first announced, sporting news.com indicated Judge…”will be re-imaged in four to six weeks.”
When Judge played his last game May 31, 2026 against the Athletics, he had had 10 doubles, 17 home runs, and had driven in 38 runs for New York. While he was hitting only .248, Judge had scored 43 runs.
The Yankees, while they lead the tough American League East Division slightly over the Tampa Bay Rays, can ill afford to go into an offensive slump.

Yankees Explore Trade Market Amid Judge’s Injury Crisis
With Aaron Judge’s season-changing rib injury casting uncertainty over New York’s offensive output, general manager Brian Cashman is reportedly targeting high-impact additions to bridge the gap. The team’s radar includes Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter, a 28-year-old left-handed slugger known for his devastating power against right-handed pitching.
Carpenter’s career-high 26 home runs (2025) and 62 RBIs make him an attractive complement to the Yankees’ existing power-hitting cadre. Despite a shoulder-related setback this season, he has maintained a .271 batting average with nine home runs in 157 plate appearances. His contract demands remain manageable – a one-year, $3.28 million deal with arbitration rights until 2029.
Scouting reports emphasize Carpenter’s strength against right-handed pitching, where he posted an .812 OPS last season. While he has been platooned against lefties, analytics suggest he could thrive in Yankee Stadium’s hitter-friendly environment. Physical attributes (6’1″, 220 lbs) and prime-age status position him as a potential All-Star contributor.

The trade calculus involves surrendering George Lombard Jr., the Yankees’ top prospect and 2024 first-round selection. At 21, the right-handed infielder represents years of development waiting to unfold. However, Carpener’s established production might justify the cost to address immediate postseason aspirations, particularly given the team’s current roster being described as “capable but needing more of the big bat that Aaron Judge provides.”

Alternative options include Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña and reliever Josh Hader per si.com reports, though both would require similar or higher price tags. Veteran catcher Carson Kelly emerges as a lower-cost option to upgrade New York’s catching depth, according to sports.yahoo contributors.
Trade Evaluation: Balancing Present and Future
While no player can replace Aaron Judge’s legendary power, Carpener offers a realistic upgrade scenario. The Tigers’ willingness to remove Carpener against left-handed pitching creates negotiation flexibility. Cashman’s evaluation hinges on whether Lombard Jr.’s long-term potential outweighs immediate offensive needs. As teams battle for AL East dominance, the deadline for impact acquisitions nears, making strategic moves imperative.
