[NASCAR Bids Beyond Competition: Epic Scale Builds for Second “Days of Thunder” Film]

During a recent visit to the Leadership Institute’s offices in Washington D.C., NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell sat down for an interview with the Wall Street Journal discussing the state of the sport and future plans.

NASCAR played a pivotal role in producing the original Days of Thunder film released in 1990. The sequel, featuring Tom Cruise returning as Cole Trickle alongside Anne Hathaway in a new role, is scheduled for release in June 2028.

At Daytona International Speedway at the conclusion of the 2026 Cup Series, Chris Cruise attended the event to promote the film and engage with the NASCAR facility. The die‑hard fan emphasized treating the sport with respect, stating he plans to give the audience the chance to understand NASCAR as a team, community, and passion—celebrating its speed, excitement, and inherent risks.

The WSJ report cited Cruise telling the governing body that viewers will include those unfamiliar with racing. NASCAR is also projected to construct over 80 race cars for seasonal film production.

Building on traditions of past productions—such as the 1990 Daytona 500 where NASCAR permitted filming during race weekends and featured driver‑operated cameras joining competitors—the upcoming sequel aims for scale comparable to the success of Top Gun’s follow‑up. The initial film relied on approximately 60 race vehicles.

The recent hit Formula One picture collaborated closely with the FIA, capturing authentic moments essential for the cinematic experience.

Steve O’Donnell assumed the leadership role in early 2026, becoming the inaugural non-France family successor to serve as NASCAR chief executive—a milestone reflecting the organization’s evolving trajectory.

Industry observers express optimism that a serious, dramatic effort akin to Days of Thunder could usher in a new chapter, potentially revitalizing broader interest across the sport.
