Head coach Xabi Alonso has praised Enzo Fernandez’s “really good attitude” following his return to Chelsea, even as speculation regarding the midfielder’s future persists.
In late May, Chelsea reached an agreement with Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, allowing the Argentine midfielder to depart for a fee of £120m, provided a bid was received by the August 14 deadline. Since that deadline passed without a formal offer, the Blues have informed the player’s representatives that he is no longer available for transfer during this window.
Manchester City, led by Fernandez’s former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, remain interested in the 25-year-old and believe a deal remains possible. However, Alonso has signaled that the midfielder remains fully committed as Chelsea prepares for their Premier League season opener against Fulham this Monday.
During Thursday’s press conference, when asked if Fernandez would remain at Stamford Bridge after the September 1 transfer deadline, Alonso responded: “Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday.”
Alonso further noted that the midfielder has integrated seamlessly into the squad since returning from the World Cup and has been performing impressively in training.
“I see him with a really good attitude, and that is exactly what we want,” Alonso concluded.
