The territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia, rooted in competing claims over an ancient temple complex, has persisted for decades and recently reignited into the deadliest clashes between the two nations in over 10 years, causing more than 100 military and civilian casualties and hundreds of injuries.
While a December 2025 ceasefire has largely held, mutual accusations of violations continue to strain relations. During meetings with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that resolving the conflict aligns with both countries’ “common and long-term interests.”
Xi advocated for dialogue and reiterated China’s commitment to playing a “constructive role” in facilitating a negotiated settlement, according to state news agency Xinhua.
