Yankees’ Shortstop Castoff, World Series Champ Joins Brewers Immediately After Cut

The New York Yankees may soon field a promising shortstop candidate as Jonathan Ornelas, a 26‑year‑old former third‑round draftee and Texas Rangers World Series champion, joins the Milwaukee Brewers following a leag​ue adjustment.

Ornelas spent much of the season underutilized with his former Yankees club before receiving a loan to the Athletics in March. He earned an invitation back to the big‑league roster shortly before Opening Day but ultimately did not secure a permanent spot. After the Yankees placed him on waivers ahead of a May deadline, Ornelas relocated to Denver (“Athletics”) before being promptly traded to Milwaukee to replace the lost infielder Brice Turang.

Since arriving at Triple‑A Las Vegas, he has put together a productive season, averaging .310 batting, .378 slugging, and .505 on-basis percentage while delivering 11 home runs in over 300 plate appearances combined with the Yankees’ and Athletics’ systems.

This resurgence has made the Brewers interested in extending his deal, and management indicated he will report to Milwaukee ahead of the rest of the regular season schedule.
