Yard Act has long been preoccupied with big questions, and as the band expanded over the years, those inquiries became increasingly complex.

World Cafe last spoke with Yard Act frontman James Smith in 2024 about Where’s My Utopia?, an album released after the band’s breakthrough. At the time, Smith was working through the complicated feelings that accompanied achieving exactly what he had wanted.

On their new album, You’re Gonna Need a Little Music, Yard Act returns to themes of success and utopia while examining broader ideas about capitalism and hyperindividualism in contemporary society.

It is also the band’s first album recorded together in a conventional studio rather than remotely or while touring.
