Southern Yemen separatist leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi called for a popular mobilization against the Houthis and in defense of southern autonomy on Tuesday, marking his first television appearance since the Southern Transitional Council (STC) lost its territory to the government in January.

His address comes as Saudi-backed government forces, supported by former STC affiliates and other southern groups, work to reverse gains made by Iran-backed Houthi rebels along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

Zubaidi urged southern Yemenis to mobilize against the Houthis and defend the southern political entity.

In his remarks, Zubaidi declared a general popular mobilization to defend the south and its national liberation project, continuing the national defense battle against Houthi militias and their Iranian expansionist agenda, as well as other extremist groups. He referenced the Arab territories within the borders existing before May 22, 1990, noting that South Yemen was independent from 1967 to 1990.
