At age 17, while studying nursing, Teun Toebes first entered a care home. He recalls stepping into a locked “closed ward,” where residents were confined, an experience that made him conclude that “we have lost the plot” in dementia treatment.

Together with filmmaker Jonathan de Jong, Teun has just released the documentary Forever Human. The film follows his years in Dutch care homes and his subsequent international search for the best dementia‑care practices worldwide.
