Davies, 22, became the first Australian in three years to claim three or more wickets on his T20I debut. He also set a new milestone for Australia, as spinners collectively took nine wickets in a single T20I innings for the first time in Bangladesh.
After outsmarting Parvez Hossain Emon and Abdul Gaffar Saqlain with a combination of flight and turn, Davies reflected on the experience: “I expected the ball to turn a bit more than it did, but I managed to extract enough from the pitch. Playing for Australia in any format has been a childhood dream, so achieving it today was a huge moment for me.”
He noted the smaller Bangladeshi grounds and the windy conditions that favored the batsmen: “The ground was generally a bit smaller than in Australia, so I had to adapt. Mitch Marsh suggested we draw the batsmen’s attention to the big boundary, which worked and gave me two wickets.”
Davies praised his teammate legspinner Adam Zampa, the match’s Player of the Match (3 for 18). “It was surreal to bowl with Zampa. I’ve watched him play since I was a kid, and to share the field with him was an unexpected honour. He’s very smart on and off the field, and he helped me fine‑tune my approach to getting wickets.”
Australia’s other debutant, 30‑year‑old legspinner Nikhil Chaudhary, recorded 1 for 14, while part‑time offspinner Matt Renshaw, considered Australia’s best bowler on tour, took 2 for 26.
Bangladesh’s new fast‑bowling coach Talha Jubair commented on the team’s innings: “We fell into a spin trap in the first T20I. The Australians aimed to force us into mistimed big shots, and we were overly reliant on boundaries. A more cautious partnership could have altered the outcome.” He added that the side struggled against Renshaw’s off‑spin, describing it as “not very effective,” but acknowledging that the bowlers still took wickets. “We hope our batsmen can learn from this in the next match,” Jubair said.
Bangladesh were dismissed for 131 in 19 overs. Australia chased the target with four wickets and ten balls to spare, securing a 1‑0 lead in the three‑match T20I series.
