Zac Thornton: From Undiscovered Prospect to Mets Pitching Breakout

Zac Thornton, a slender left‑hander whose fastball topped out at 78–80 mph, moved with his family from Minnesota to Lawrence, Kansas, just before his junior year of high school, when his father took a position as a track coach at the University of Kansas.

Although still raw, he found himself lower on the varsity roster behind veteran players as a junior; the COVID‑19 pandemic then eliminated his senior season, and no college scholarship offers materialized.

Consequently, Thornton enrolled at Barton Community College close to home to continue his baseball career.

‘He possesses a loose arm, is a strong mover, an excellent athlete, and comes from a supportive family and a good character,’ Barton pitching coach Brett McBride said to Sports+ this week.
