Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday that the administration of US President Donald Trump should immediately impose fresh sanctions on Russia in response to recent deadly attacks in Ukraine.
Zelensky made the remarks after announcing plans to meet Trump in late September as part of ongoing US-led efforts to broker an end to the four-and-a-half-year war.
“Sanctions need to be imposed now,” Zelensky told the Yalta European Strategy forum.
“Honestly, I sometimes do not understand why decisions cannot be made quickly,” he added.
Zelensky also called for an agreement to prevent attacks on energy infrastructure. He warned that Ukraine would retaliate if Russia targeted the country’s power grid during the winter.
“Russia knows that if they strike… they will receive the same in return,” he said.
Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-range attacks against each other in recent months, while US-led negotiations aimed at ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II remain stalled.
An early-morning Russian drone attack on a petrol station in Kyiv killed two people and wounded four others, according to the city’s mayor.
