Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is facing mounting political pressure as nationwide protests intensify, with demonstrators issuing an ultimatum: reinstate popular Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and dismiss General Oleksandr Syrsky, the military’s chief of staff, by Friday.
The crisis deepened after Zelensky removed Fedorov from his post last week, citing irreconcilable differences between the two leaders. Fedorov, who had enjoyed widespread public support for his role in organizing Ukraine’s defense efforts, became a focal point for public discontent following his dismissal.
The protests have simultaneously highlighted growing dissatisfaction with General Syrsky, whose leadership during the defense of Kyiv in 2022 was initially praised. However, his reputation has deteriorated over time, with critics accusing him of employing brutal tactics that result in unnecessary casualties among Ukrainian forces. Additionally, allegations of corruption within his command structure have further eroded public confidence in his leadership.
