A 12-year-old girl was fatally shot in Baltimore over the weekend during what police described as a dispute over a parking space.
The girl was caught in the crossfire when two men exchanged gunfire over a parking spot in a park where children were playing American football.
In addition to the girl, another woman sustained gunshot wounds when officers arrived, and two men sought treatment at local hospitals for injuries related to the shooting.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a news conference that investigators are searching for at least two suspects.
“What we know is there was an argument between two cowards,” Worley stated. “They both opened fire on each other. In the crossfire, a 12‑year‑old girl who was likely watching football was shot and killed.”
Worley added that the girl, whose name has not been released, was not the intended target of the shooting.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital. The three other injured individuals have non‑life‑threatening wounds, according to Worley.
The incident occurred after 18:00 EDT (23:00 BST) on Saturday.
Authorities continue to investigate the shooting and have urged any witnesses to come forward with information.
It remains unclear how many rounds were fired, Worley noted.
“Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12‑year‑old is gone,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at the news conference.
“We should never have to say something like that. What happened here today is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever witnessed.”
