Police have confirmed that the victim of a deadly sword attack at a central Swedish high school was a 17‑year‑old girl.
Two boys, ages 12 and 17, were seriously injured in the attack at Brinell School in Fagersta on Friday afternoon, according to local authorities, while a third individual sustained minor injuries.
An 18‑year‑old man, whose name has not been released, was arrested, and police said they are treating the case as murder and attempted murder.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday morning, where flower tributes have been placed in honor of the victims.
Students had only just returned from summer break when the deadly attack unfolded on Friday afternoon.
Police later confirmed they fired shots after being called to the scene but did not say whether the alleged attacker was injured before he was detained.
Sweden’s public broadcaster reported that the suspect was wearing a helmet, and local media indicated he was a former student.
The region declared a state of emergency on Friday, which had concluded by Saturday.
The school, with just under 500 students on its roster according to SVT, is located 170 km (105 miles) northwest of Stockholm.
Investigators have already conducted two house searches related to the suspect, police said.
On Friday, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the attack as a “serious incident,” stating that “we do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working intensively,” in a post on X.
Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf said he received the news “with dismay and sadness.”
