2027 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC NASCAR Prototype Under Test at Charlotte Ahead of 2027 Season

Ford is preparing a new NASCAR Cup car for the 2027 season, as a vehicle covered in blue camouflage was photographed testing today during a Goodyear tire session at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The camouflage matches the special wrap seen on Ford’s hypercar prototype overseas. Teams are testing at Charlotte ahead of a likely new intermediate tire for 2027.

Ford had announced earlier this year that it will debut a new Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC at the 2027 Daytona 500, and the car observed at Charlotte is believed to be that prototype.

Ford Racing’s global director, Mark Rushbrook, stated in January that “In 2027, we will take the Dark Horse SC and debut it at America’s race track with America’s race team, the Daytona 500.”

These hints suggest that the styling of the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC will shape the new NASCAR Cup car, and photos from the track indicate substantial front‑end modifications.

Ford introduced the Mustang Dark Horse NASCAR Cup car in late 2023 and launched it for the 2024 season. It has now completed three years of competition without major aerodynamic updates. While teams have managed to adapt the car to various circuits, the Mustang has struggled to be the fastest on intermediate tracks that heavily rely on downforce. The 2027 Dark Horse SC is expected to improve adaptability on those tracks and close the gap with the dominant Toyota Camry Cup car.

Based on the design of the 2026 Ford Mustang SC production model, the 2027 Cup version is likely to feature less pronounced fenders and a lower grille top, similar to Chevrolet and Toyota’s Cup cars. The production model also incorporates flipped grille vents in the lower bumper corners, a detail expected to appear on the new Cup car to enhance front downforce.
