United Airlines Offers Free Flight Changes to Avoid Landing at Renamed Palm Beach Airport
United Airlines is offering passengers free flight changes to avoid landing at Palm Beach International Airport, which was recently renamed to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” according to an internal memo obtained by *Live And Let’s Fly*. The airline aims to accommodate travelers who object to the new name by rerouting them to nearby alternatives like Fort Lauderdale or Miami International Airport at no additional cost.
The memo instructs reservation agents to proactively request passenger consent to switch flights to alternative destinations, such as Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA), which are approximately 45 and 72 miles south of West Palm Beach, respectively. Changes are to be processed as “even exchanges,” effectively waiving standard flight modification fees.
United Airlines emphasized that these adjustments are discretionary and subject to availability. “If a customer does not want to fly to the airport, use your empowerment to offer acceptable alternatives such as Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA),” the memo states. However, the airline reserves the right to deny changes if no viable alternatives exist.
The renaming of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport” followed Florida’s legal mandate but has sparked significant backlash. Passenger complaints flooded the airport’s contact form, with some vowing permanent boycotts. Responses ranged from outrage—including comparisons to the airport’s “disgusting” new name—to demands for airbag-equipped welcome wagons.
United’s system updates will retain the airport’s current IATA code (PBI) until August 18, when it transitions to “DJT.” FOX Business has contacted the airline for additional commentary. The airport, however, reiterated that its ownership and operations remain unchanged under the new designation.

The changes reflect broader tensions surrounding politically charged airport names. While Palm Beach International’s rebranding aligns with state requirements, United’s gesture underscores the airline’s sensitivity to customer preferences amid ongoing debates over symbolic renaming practices.
