MrBeast and James Patterson’s Thriller Faces Uncertain Launch Amid Sluggish Preorders

The highly anticipated collaboration between YouTuber MrBeast and author James Patterson is encountering early sales challenges.

According to Semafor, their new novel, The Most Dangerous Games, is experiencing weak preorder numbers.

Citing anonymous sources “close to the project,” Semafor reported that the thriller is “on track to be a historic bomb.” Sources noted that as of last week, preorders were “numbering in the four digits … a tiny fraction of what the publisher will need to justify the substantial fees paid to Patterson and YouTuber Jimmy Donaldson [aka MrBeast].” As of Monday, the book ranked No. 18 on Amazon’s new releases list.

However, another informed source told The Hollywood Reporter that the preorder volume is not unusual for a genre novel, emphasizing that first-week sales are the true indicator of success. This source also highlighted that the book currently holds the No. 1 spot on the mystery novels list.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to representatives for publisher HarperCollins for comment.

According to the book’s webpage, the logline reads: “A thousand strangers receive the invitation. One hundred make the cut.
