Ruturaj Gaikwad Confirms CSK Will Take Time to Hire New Head Coach

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has confirmed that the franchise feels no urgency to appoint a new head coach following the departure of Stephen Fleming in July.

The five‑time IPL champions decided to part ways with their long‑standing mentor after disappointing performances in the last two seasons. Fleming, who joined the league as a player in its inaugural 2008 season, transitioned to coaching in 2009. Over 17 years he guided the team to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 crowns, cementing the Super Kings’ reputation as one of the world’s most successful franchises. Gaikwad added that with the 2027 season still several months away, there is no rush to finalize a replacement.

“We will have a head coach. The management is obviously thinking about it. There is still plenty of time before the IPL, so there is no rush to make a decision,” Gaikwad told the reporters, as quoted by The Tribune.

How does Gaikwad view the captaincy of the franchise?

Gaikwad assumed the captaincy in 2024 and recorded finishes of fifth, tenth and eighth place across three campaigns, missing the playoffs each time. Doubts about his leadership intensified after the team’s poor showing in 2026, especially with the arrival of marquee player Sanju Samson, who also brings IPL captaincy experience. Gaikwad has reiterated his desire to continue as skipper, acknowledging the weighty legacy left by MS Dhoni, under whose leadership the franchise secured its five IPL trophies.

“Yes, it has definitely changed a lot. I won’t deny that. Taking over from MS Dhoni comes with a lot of responsibility because of his immense success, and naturally, there are high expectations for more wins and titles. But that’s part of the role. As long as I continue to enjoy it, I’m happy to do it,” he said.

Does Gaikwad think CSK can bounce back after poor results in the last seasons?

Reflecting on the franchise’s illustrious history, Gaikwad expressed hope that fans will remain patient during the current transition. “We have been on an incredible journey since 2008, winning an IPL trophy in almost every cycle – a level of consistency few teams have achieved. Our supporters have stood by us through extraordinary moments, and we need them to stay with us through the challenging periods as well,” he concluded.
