Tilak Varma delivered a match-winning performance, following up his stellar 116* in the first innings with an unbeaten 51 to guide South Zone into the Duleep Trophy final. South Zone will now face Ishan Kishan’s East Zone in the championship match scheduled for September 6 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Tilak, promoted to number four after South Zone had lost two quick wickets just before lunch on Wednesday, constructed an invaluable unbeaten partnership of 80 runs with R Smaran, who contributed a steady 31*. Together, they chased down the target of 181 with composure and precision. After surviving an early lbw appeal off left-arm spinner Abid Mushtaq on his first ball, Tilak played cautiously before accelerating once the required runs dropped below the 50-run mark.
Smaran, who had been pushing for an India A berth following an outstanding Ranji Trophy season where he topped the run-scoring charts, demonstrated excellent temperament by accepting a supporting role. He rotated the strike efficiently and prevented the spinners from building any sustained pressure. The flat black-soil pitch offered minimal assistance to the bowlers throughout the encounter.
Mushtaq, however, managed to claim two wickets through his sheer skill, despite the surface offering considerably less turn than the red-soil quarter-final pitch, which had kept bowlers competitive throughout all four days.
The match took a dramatic turn late on the third afternoon when South Zone’s pace attack seized control of the contest. MD Nidheesh, the Kerala fast bowler, registered his 10th first-class five-wicket haul, finishing with remarkable figures of 5 for 56. This spell included the three early North Zone wickets to fall in Wednesday’s first session, establishing a commanding 180-run lead.
North Zone will undoubtedly rue their dramatic second-innings collapse as the decisive turning point. Having been cruising comfortably at 175 for 2, thanks to Sanat Sangwan’s half-century, the introduction of Nidheesh and leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal transformed the match. North Zone lost 5 wickets for just 34 runs, collapsing spectacularly before a valuable late-order partnership between Anshul Kamboj and Nishant Sindhu helped extend their lead past the 100-run mark. The pair added 60 runs for the eighth wicket, providing their bowlers with a defendable total.
South Zone began their pursuit positively, with openers Ricky Bhui and N Jagadeesan constructing an opening stand of 64 runs before losing two wickets within eight deliveries. Number three batsman Shaik Rasheed struggled throughout the match, dismissed for just 1 to add to his first-innings duck, leaving South Zone in precarious territory before Smaran and Tilak steadied the ship and guided them to victory.
While Nidheesh deservedly claimed the bowling accolades in the second innings, Vidwath Kaverappa’s four-wicket spell on the opening day laid the foundation for South Zone’s success, as North Zone was bundled out for 195. On a pitch that progressively improved for batting, this early advantage proved to be the decisive factor in the outcome.
