The Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform (MCCUU), currently in service since 2022, is undergoing a significant transformation. The Portfolio Acquisition Executive Marine Corps’ Program Manager for Combat Support Systems recently announced the modernization of individual equipment through the Next-Generation Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform (NexGen MCCUU). Described as an “evolution” of the current battledress, this new design aims to enhance the operational capabilities of Marines.
The NexGen MCCUU maintains the familiar characteristics of its predecessor while offering superior combat utility and mobility across diverse environmental conditions.
USMC Feedback Mechanisms
For centuries, military personnel were rarely afforded the opportunity to influence uniform design. Traditional top-down procurement, driven by high-ranking officials and civilian tailors, frequently prioritized visual conformity and cost-efficiency over the comfort and mobility required by frontline operators. Consequently, historical uniforms were often plagued by discomfort, excessive weight, and poor climate adaptability.

The MCCUU was already engineered with Marine comfort in mind, but the NexGen MCCUU advances this philosophy further. The updated design incorporates lighter-weight materials and an improved fit. According to the PAE MC, the new iteration features a crotch gusset to enhance comfort and durability, alongside updated sizing and two distinct uniform cuts to accommodate a wider range of Marine body types.
While these modifications may appear incremental, they are strategically intended to enhance mobility and better support Marines during rigorous training and operational missions.
“Equipment must evolve continuously to outpace near-peer technological advancements and deliver peak capabilities to the Fleet Marine Force,” said Todd Towles, Clothing and Equipment Team Lead.
“Just like a rifle or an armored vehicle, the combat uniform is a critical piece of tactical gear. Material advantages on the battlefield directly save lives and secure operational success,” Towles added.
The USMC has entered the initial production stage, during which NexGen MCCUUs will be issued for wear testing and user evaluation. Feedback gathered from this phase will be utilized to further refine the uniforms prior to their adoption across the entire Fleet Marine Force.
“As part of an ongoing Limited User Evaluation (LUE), NexGen MCCUUs were issued on Aug. 4 and 5 to Command Staff, Drill Instructors, and recruits from three platoons in Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Participants will continue wear testing and complete evaluations at the conclusion of the LUE,” the USMC explained.
Unlike previous eras where warfighters had negligible input into their attire, the USMC is now actively soliciting feedback to refine the very clothes its personnel wear.
“A Marine who is protected, agile, and unburdened is a faster, more lethal, and more effective kinetic asset. Plain and simple,” explained Towles. “The next step for the team is a near-term fielding to Fleet units for Marine feedback in the different environments and missions our units deploy to. We are also testing articles at Natick Army Lab to ensure we incorporate objective analysis on durability and performance.”
The U.S. Navy’s Initiative for Optimized Fit
The push for improved uniforms extends beyond the Marine Corps, as the United States Navy actively collects data to refine the attire worn by its female service members.
Last month, “scientists, designers, engineers and textile experts from the Navy Exchange Service Command’s Navy Clothing and Textile Research Facility collaborated with nearly 80 female Sailors during a five-day fit evaluation,” the U.S. Navy announced.
The specialized fitting session took place at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story and NEX Norfolk, Virginia. Between August 17 and 21, 2026, the combined research team gathered measurement data and employed cutting-edge technologies to evaluate prototype uniforms regarding concept of fit, functional design, and size prediction accuracy.
“I feel like I’m drowning when I wear men’s sizes,” said Commander Jennifer Lo, a 30-year Navy veteran.
The U.S. Navy recognizes that for sailors like Lo, a properly fitting uniform serves a dual purpose: projecting the professional appearance expected of the service while providing “confidence and functional readiness” to maximize operational effectiveness.
NCTRF scientists, designers, engineers and textile experts collected body measurements and Sailor feedback to evaluate prototype uniforms and help determine future sizing and fit recommendations.

During the recent evaluation, sailors tested several prototypes and provided immediate feedback while experts conducted their assessments. Insights from these FitClinic participants will assist the Navy in determining the viability of new fit types and updating its sizing patterns, allowing new uniforms to be “built” around the sailors who wear them.
“We learned from our Fit Clinics in 2022 that we needed to expand our current ‘Alpha’ and ‘Bravo’ modernized fit types to add ‘Charlie’ and ‘Delta’ as well to ensure we captured all body types,” said Dr. Brianna Plummer, Group Leader, Design & Testing Laboratories at NCTRF. “The data collected from the latest fit evaluation will help determine whether the additional fit categories are needed and whether they align with existing body types.”
According to the U.S. Navy, this modern methodology will replace the outdated, restrictive sizing system that has been in place for decades.
The service acknowledged that properly fitting uniforms will not only bolster sailor confidence but also reduce costs. By delivering a correctly sized uniform, the need for expensive alterations is diminished. Some advancements have already reached the fleet, including Service Khaki slacks with back pockets and Summer and Dress White female overblouses in short-sleeve and long-sleeve variants, currently available at select NEX Uniform Shops.
“NCTRF is currently focused on modernizing the size and fit of female uniforms, with plans to evaluate male uniform sizing in the coming years,” the U.S. Navy added. “The goal is simple: Uniforms should fit the Sailors wearing them, and Sailors should have a say in how the Navy gets there.”
