Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are entering a new chapter following Stephen Fleming’s departure as head coach to lead the England cricket team. Fleming’s 18-year tenure delivered five IPL titles, making the selection of his successor a critical decision for the franchise.
Candidates to Succeed Stephen Fleming at CSK
Former CSK opener Matthew Hayden has endorsed Dinesh Karthik for the vacant coaching role. Hayden argues that Karthik possesses the necessary experience, local expertise, and coaching background to guide CSK forward.
Karthik’s ties to Chennai present a significant advantage. Born in the city and deeply connected to Tamil Nadu cricket, Karthik could enhance communication with young players and reinforce the franchise’s regional identity, according to Hayden.
Since retiring from international cricket in 2024, Karthik has begun his coaching journey, joining Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as batting coach and mentor under head coach Andy Flower. Hayden notes that working alongside elite coaches has equipped Karthik with a strong grasp of tactical and technical aspects.
“Dinesh Karthik would be a fantastic choice for CSK. He has been mentored by world-class coaches like Andy Flower, who boasts a stellar playing and coaching career. However, being a local Tamil boy is, in my opinion, a really important element,” Hayden stated on the Wisden Cricket podcast.
He added: “It isn’t mandatory, but for Tamil Nadu cricket, I felt CSK has always been supported by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. Therefore, incorporating a local element seems like the next logical step for CSK.”
“CSK famously looks abroad. You know, they ship in fish from overseas. Very few players actually originate from Tamil Nadu itself. Furthermore, being a foreign coach in the IPL is challenging. I respect those who do it, as there are natural language barriers, particularly with seasoned Indian cricket veterans, though many current squads are filled with them.”

CSK endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing eighth and missing the playoffs after securing only six victories from 14 matches. With Fleming’s exit creating a significant void, the franchise may pursue a new direction under incoming head coach.
