Five Dead in Overnight Kyiv Strikes as Toll Rises

Overnight explosions across Ukraine’s capital initially killed three people and injured 25, according to the state emergencies service DSNS.

Residential buildings sustained damage, including a five-storey house in the Solomianskyi district, and vehicles caught fire in the Podilskyi district.

Residents sought shelter in a Kyiv metro station during the overnight attack, a routine precaution amid the ongoing war.

By Tuesday afternoon, the death toll had risen to five.

A BBC Verify analysis found that Kyiv is experiencing more daily air raid alerts than at any point since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

In Russia, buildings in the city of Saratov were struck during a Ukrainian drone attack, regional governor Roman Busargin said early Tuesday.

Peace talks involving Trump’s top envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow and Kyiv ended without major breakthroughs.

On Tuesday evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call described by Moscow as “constructive and very frank.”

The two leaders spoke for about an hour, according to Putin’s senior adviser Yuriy Ushakov.

The Trump administration has not publicly commented, though Witkoff earlier said “substantive progress was made” without elaborating.

Ushakov said on Saturday that Trump’s envoys were briefed in Moscow on “significant advances” by Russian forces on the battlefield, with the Kremlin stressing its objectives would be achieved.

Meanwhile, Zelensky said he expected the war to continue into winter after meeting Witkoff and Kushner in Kyiv on Sunday—their first visit to Ukraine.

Zelensky told reporters that officials from Ukraine, Europe, and America would meet soon to continue discussions, and he called for a trilateral meeting with Russia and the US.

Putin has shown no sign of backing down from his maximalist demands, including further territorial concessions from Ukraine.
