Fourteen suspected people smugglers have gone on trial in Paris for their role in the deadliest small boats disaster in the English Channel.
In November 2021, at least 30 men, women, and children drowned when their motorised dinghy deflated and began taking on water halfway between France and the UK.
The 14 defendants—primarily Afghan nationals—stand accused of manslaughter and facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organized criminal network.
While most of the defendants deny the charges, two individuals alleged to be the leaders of the operation remain at large and are being tried in absentia.
The ill-fated vessel departed the French coast on the evening of November 23, 2021, but soon encountered severe difficulties in the middle of the Channel.
As the boat sank, occupants one by one entered the frigid water in an attempt to reduce the vessel’s weight, but ultimately succumbed to the extreme cold. Only two men survived the tragedy.
According to the official charges, the defendants orchestrated the launch of “a small boat of poor quality, unfit to navigate at sea, overloaded, and equipped with inadequate life jackets.”
Recovery efforts confirmed twenty-seven bodies after the sinking, while an additional four individuals were declared missing.
Among the victims were many Iraqi Kurds, alongside individuals from Somalia, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Afghanistan. The youngest identified victim was only seven years old.
