Syrian officials said an explosion at a temporary weapons storage site killed at least 14 people and injured 11 others on Wednesday.
The blast occurred near Sarmada in northwestern Idlib Province.
What We Know About the Explosion
The Syrian Defense Ministry said the weapons and war remnants were being held temporarily at the site prior to relocation, and that several of its personnel were among the wounded.
The blast in an area filled with volatile materials triggered secondary explosions and fires, complicating rescue efforts. Smoke continued to rise from the site for much of Wednesday.
The Idlib Health Department reported a preliminary toll of 14 killed and 11 injured from the blast at a temporary weapons and munitions storage site near Sarmada.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the explosion.
This marks the second deadly incident of its type in Idlib Province this month; on September 1, a vehicle carrying ammunition exploded in Binnish, killing five and wounding several others.
Syria has only recently emerged from over a decade of civil war, during which forces loyal to President Ahmed al‑Sharaa toppled Bashar al‑Assad and seized Damascus. Idlib Province was among the regions most severely affected by the conflict.
