New Delhi, September 10: At 47 years old, former South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir continues to defy age and expectations with a match-winning performance in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). His brilliance was on full display at a packed Providence Stadium on September 10th during the clash between Guyana Amazon Warriors and St Lucia Kings.
In a dominant spell of four overs, Tahir took five wickets for just 17 runs, helping Guyana bowl out the Kings for 119. His performance single-handedly shifted the momentum in favor of the Warriors, showcasing why experience and passion remain undefeated by time.
Tahir’s Spin Spell Destroys Kings’ Lineup
St. Lucia Kings won the toss and chose to bat first. While they started quickly, Guyana’s spin duo soon tightened the screws and brought the runs to a virtual halt.
Imran Tahir emerged as the standout performer, conceding only 17 runs across his four overs while claiming five wickets at an impressive economy rate of 4.25. His teammates also contributed significantly—Mehidy Hasan Miraz taking three wickets for 13 runs in his four-over spell.
Tahir dismantled the Kings’ batting lineup with precision and guile. His first breakthrough came when he trapped top-scorer Kamil Pooran lbw for 43. He followed it up by dismissing captain Roston Chase in similar fashion, striking fear into the rest of the batting order.
The veteran spinner then bowled Mackenzie Clarke and Matthew Ford off consecutive deliveries before sealing his five-wicket haul by trapping Joshua Bishop lbw. Although Bishop reviewed the decision, the original call stood, capping off a memorable spell for the leg-spinner.
Pienaar’s Fightback Falls Short
With the scoreboard reading 73 for seven, the Kings faced a steep uphill task. Despite the spinners’ tight bowling, Obass Pienaar offered resistance with a gritty 35 off 28 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six.
Maheesh Theekshana chipped in with an unbeaten six from 11 deliveries, but it wasn’t enough as the Kings were bowled out for 119 in 18.5 overs.
Guyana chased down the target with ease, reaching 122 for six in just 18.3 overs to secure a comfortable victory. Alongside Tahir’s five wickets, Miraz claimed three, while Dwaine Pretorius and Romario Shepherd each picked up one.
