Following a highly anticipated debut for the Rams on Thursday night, Myles Garrett admitted that his performance in the 27-7 loss to the 49ers was one of the poorest of his career, noting a complete lack of tackles, sacks, or pressures.
“This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there,” Garrett remarked. “I’ve got to be better. I’ve got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and I’ve shown that I’ve been before.”
Garrett, who missed the preseason and had limited participation in training camp due to a knee injury, stated that his immediate priority is “getting healthy.”
“That’s the main thing,” Garrett said. “When I was out there, I was a little more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than on what they were doing, and it showed. I wasn’t what I needed to be for my team.”
Garrett dismissed the idea that the long travel to Australia or the Rams’ decision to arrive just a day before kickoff played a role in his performance.
“I wasn’t the player I wanted to be; I didn’t feel like I was the player I’ve been before when I stepped onto that field. I’ve got to do what I can to get back to that,” Garrett added.
The reigning NFL Defensive Player of Defense, whose blockbuster trade to the Rams was the centerpiece of the offseason, was largely neutralized against the 49ers. The Rams will now look to see if this struggle was merely a one-time occurrence.
