Edson Alvarez Denies Claims Linking Him to Mexico Kidnapping Allegations

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez has rejected allegations that he was involved in the alleged abduction of Mexican film producer Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez.

Lopez Ordonez told Mexican publication TV Notas that, in 2024, members of Alvarez’s former father-in-law Jonathan Toache Bedolla’s family forced him into a vehicle at gunpoint in Mexico City’s Polanco district.

Lopez Ordonez said Alvarez was not directly involved in the kidnapping but was aware of the plan. He alleged that he had been hired to create a documentary about the footballer and remained owed £150,000.

Alvarez, who made his Mexico debut in 2017 and serves as captain, addressed the claims on social media and said he was considering legal action.

“I categorically reject any allegation or attempt to associate my name with events, conflicts, or conduct that are entirely unrelated to me,” Alvarez posted.

“Over the past several months, my name and image have repeatedly been used to generate greater media attention around a situation that has nothing to do with me.

“Until now, I had chosen not to respond. However, there are limits, and attributing knowledge, responsibility, or involvement in matters of this nature to me without presenting a single piece of evidence clearly crosses that line.”

Alvarez said media outlets had prioritised “sensationalism” over “accuracy and truth”, adding that he intended to focus on his family and career.

Since joining West Ham from Ajax in 2023, Alvarez has made 74 appearances for the club. He has featured just once this season, against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup.
