HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Brings the Original Book Title Back to U.S. Readers

HBO’s television adaptation of Harry Potter is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on December 25, 2026. The series will introduce a new cast and adapt all seven books, with its first season focusing on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Following the release of the season’s trailer, the franchise is preparing both longtime fans and newcomers for another journey into the Wizarding World.

To mark the series’ arrival, the official Harry Potter website has announced a new edition of the first novel featuring cover art inspired by the HBO production. The release also represents a significant change for U.S. readers: the book will abandon the American title, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in favor of the original U.K. title, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. According to the official announcement, the story itself will remain unchanged “down to the last letter.”

The U.S. edition was first published in 1998 with a revised title and selected wording changes intended to appeal to American readers. In a 2001 BBC interview, J.K. Rowling said she regretted agreeing to the title change, explaining that she had wanted to keep her publishers happy because it was her first book. The new English-language edition will be released worldwide on November 3, 2026.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone follows Harry, an orphan living with his abusive aunt, uncle and cousin after Lord Voldemort murdered his parents. On his 11th birthday, the half-giant Rubeus Hagrid reveals that Harry is a wizard and invites him to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, Harry befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, but their first year takes a dangerous turn when they discover that the Philosopher’s Stone is hidden at the school and that Voldemort intends to claim it.

The novel was previously adapted as a feature film in 2001, with Daniel Radcliffe making his debut as Harry Potter. The movie became a major commercial success, earning more than $1 billion worldwide.

The HBO series will feature Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron and Hermione. The ensemble also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
