Bill Maher Condemns ‘Moral Confusion’ and Celebrities Over Israel-Gaza Conflict

Two decades after making controversial remarks about the 9/11 attackers, comedian and political commentator Bill Maher has emerged as a prominent critic of what he describes as widespread moral confusion regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

During a recent episode of his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, which aired on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Maher revisited his past statements to draw a sharp contrast between the past and present political climate. He used the occasion to criticize prominent Democrats and public figures for what he views as support for terrorist organizations.

Maher argued that the moral clarity that defined the immediate post-9/11 era has been replaced by a misguided sympathy for Hamas, which he characterized as a “terrorist mafia gang” rather than a legitimate liberation movement. He specifically targeted younger generations, mocking their reliance on social media platforms like TikTok for understanding complex geopolitical conflicts.

The comedian saved some of his harshest criticism for celebrities who have recently voiced strong pro-Palestinian sentiments. He specifically called out musician Macklemore, who sparked backlash after lecturing concertgoers at an Ed Sheeran event about the situation in Gaza. Maher dismissed Macklemore’s assertion of knowing “enough to know this is a genocide,” telling the artist, “Actually, you don’t know s***.”

Maher contends that the conflict is not a genocide, but rather a necessary counter-attack in a long-standing war. He pointed out that Israel has historically provided significant humanitarian aid to Gaza and facilitated medical travel for Palestinians, contrasting this with Hamas’s alleged actions of diverting resources. He concluded by asserting that the Democratic Party’s current stance on the issue represents one of its most significant moral failures since the end of Reconstruction.
