BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic rebounded strongly from its season-opening defeat, securing its first win of the year with a narrow 38-30 victory over Navy on Saturday night. The Owls capitalized on quarterback Caden Veltkamp’s five touchdown passes and a stifling defensive performance, overcoming a late Navy rally to claim a hard-fought American Athletic Conference opener.
Veltkamp threw for 373 yards, connecting on 27 of 32 passes, including a career-high 179-yard, two-touchdown performance by Easton Messer. The senior wide receiver’s dominance on the perimeter, combined with Kelby Valsin’s 115 receiving yards and one touchdown, showcased FAU’s revitalized aerial attack. “Easton Messer just ran right past them. Then what a ball (from Veltkamp),” FAU coach Zach Kittley praised.
The Owls’ defense, which had surrendered 66 points in their previous game, completely transformed, holding Navy to just 236 total yards and forcing two turnovers. Defensive end Josh Roberts highlighted the unit’s physicality: “Last week was like a wake-up call. We needed it to humble us. We went out and did our thing today.”
However, FAU’s fourth quarter struggled nearly erased their lead. Trailing by 31 points early in the final frame, the Owls surrendered 117 yards and two touchdowns to Navy, briefly allowing the Midshipmen to close the gap to 16-8. Backup quarterback Jackson Gutierrez stepped in after starter Braxton Woodson’s injury, adding urgency to Navy’s comeback. FAU running back Ethan Ervin’s clutch first-down run with under a minute remaining sealed the win, marking FAU’s first-ever victory over Navy in program history.

Kicker Collin Rogers set a school record with a 60-yard field goal before halftime, adding to the energy in FAU’s offense. Veltkamp’s precision and decision-making marked a stark contrast to his six interceptions in the season opener, with the quarterback emphasizing his focus on flawless execution: “I try to aim for perfection, it’s really that simple.”
The Owls’ offensive firepower, anchored by versatile receivers and a balanced running game, has generated excitement entering conference play. “There should be no way anybody can stop this offense,” Messer declared, reflecting the team’s emerging confidence. Despite the fourth-quarter scare, FAU’s resilience in overcoming Navy’s determined comeback attempt underscored their character and potential as a rising AAC contender.
