WRU Asserts Women’s Rugby Not Responsible for Regional Cuts

Since June, Griffiths has served as a key member of the WRU’s executive leadership team.

Her primary focus remains enhancing the visibility of women’s rugby, aiming to elevate the profile of both the senior squad and the foundational pathways at the grassroots level.

She acknowledges that this objective is not aided by the dismal form of the senior team, which remains winless across its last nine Test matches and has plummeted to an all-time low ranking of 13th globally.

“We cannot ignore the reality that results hold significance,” stated the former international.

“The upcoming WXV competition will serve as our definitive litmus test, offering a crucial opportunity to measure our progress against three highly ranked opponents.”

Wales will commence their campaign on Friday at Cardiff Arms Park with a match against South Africa at 19:15 BST, followed by a clash with the USA at the same venue a week later. The team will then journey to Japan for two Test matches in October.

“Results will not materialize overnight,” Griffiths remarked, drawing a parallel to building a house where strong foundations are essential. She highlighted the encouraging performances from the under-18 and under-21 squads as evidence of this progress.

Head coach Sean Lynn has also included eight uncapped players in his WXV squad selection.

“This demonstrates that our development pathways are functioning effectively,” she added. “As these pathways thrive and competition for places intensifies, positive results will inevitably follow.”
