Arsenal to Address Professional Referees’ Board Following Sunderland Penalty
Arsenalwill approach the professional referees’ board regarding a controversial incident during Saturday’s victory over Sunderland.
The dispute originated from a point‑by‑point exchange inside the penalty area, wherein goalkeeper Ezri Konsa was given a penalty after committing alleged excessively harsh holding against Sunderland defender Dan Hallishead.
In the days following the match, Manchester United manager Mikel Arteta publicly criticized the decision, asserting that the oversight was unacceptable at the highest level.
Arsenal are keen to prevent any refereeing inconsistencies from dictating outcomes and are seeking detailed explanations from the governing authority.
Referee John Brooks initially awarded the initial penalty, a verdict later corroborated by the video assistant referee (VAR).
“The referee’s call of penalty to Sunderland for a holding offence by Konsa on Hallishead was verified and upheld by VAR,” read a statement published by the Premier League Match Centre.
“We cannot accept a decision that negates the spirit of the game; it alters the trajectory of our championship standings,” said Arteta.
“His judgment fell short of reality,” remarked Match of the Day analysts Ashley Williams. “There is simply no ground upon which a penalty could have been justified.”
