GameStop announced it will reopen a selection of previously closed stores nationwide, coinciding with new stock purchases by company insiders.
The retailer shared via social media that these select locations will resume operations starting September 11.
Initially, GameStop did not publish a full list of the stores slated to reopen. A spokesperson told FOX Business that at least one location—in Brooklyn, Ohio—is included in the first wave.
The decision follows a prolonged period of store closures and cost‑cutting measures. Over the past few years, GameStop has closed hundreds of locations in an effort to lower expenses and restructure its retail footprint.

The reopenings align with recent investments by leadership. CEO Ryan Cohen acquired 1 million shares of GameStop’s Class A common stock on September 10 at an average price of roughly $20.38 per share, a transaction valued at about $20.4 million, according to regulatory filings.
Board member Alain Attal also bought 5,000 shares on the same day, investing approximately $100,000.

Meanwhile, GameStop’s sales mix has continued to shift away from traditional video game software and toward collectibles.
Collectibles, including trading cards, accounted for 45.1% of GameStop’s net sales during the company’s most recent quarter, up from roughly 29% for fiscal 2025. Collectibles sales increased 57% from the same quarter a year earlier.
