Governor Gavin Newsom stated in a forthcoming CNN interview that he will not pursue the presidency in 2028 if former Vice President Kamala Harris chooses to run, emphasizing the political implications of such a primary contest.
Both Newsom and Harris, California politicians widely regarded as leading establishment contenders for the Democratic nomination, have faced speculation over their 2028 ambitions. Newsom, who concludes his governorship this year, has increasingly positioned himself as a counterpoint to former President Donald Trump.
However, Newsom cautioned that a Harris-Newsom matchup would be counterproductive, arguing it would “waste everybody’s time” and serve as a “gift from God” to their political opponents.
“I wouldn’t do that to her,” Newsom told CNN anchor Jake Tapper. “I wouldn’t waste everybody’s time.”
He clarified that a direct contest would create unnecessary friction, stating, “The zeal diagram on that’s pure crossover. I wouldn’t do that to people.”
While Newsom previously considered entering the 2024 race, he ultimately concluded he was “not ready” and remains evaluating his preparedness for the upcoming primary.
“You have to meet the moment,” Newsom reflected. “You have to be honest with yourself. Do you represent the zeitgeist of the moment? Are you wasting everybody’s time?”
The comments were made during a fishing trip with Tapper on Montana’s Bitterroot River, a location tied to Newsom’s family legacy.
Despite his public reluctance to challenge Harris, Newsom has actively expanded his national profile, deploying sharp rhetoric against Trump on social media and cultivating alliances with political influencers. He also spearheaded a California redistricting initiative aimed at countering Republican gerrymandering efforts ahead of the 2024 midterms.
Harris, who lost decisively to Trump in 2024 amid controversy surrounding President Biden’s late withdrawal from the race, has yet to formally announce her 2028 intentions. Though she remains a recognized Democratic figure, her post-election posture has been notably subdued compared to Newsom’s proactive national campaigning.
