Indigenous Chief Raoni Receives Palliative Care at Home After Cancer Diagnosis

SAO PAULO — Indigenous Chief Raoni Metuktire is receiving palliative care at his home in Brazil’s Mato Grosso state after a cancer diagnosis, according to a statement released Monday by the Raoni Institute.

The institute said the cancer, located in Raoni’s digestive system, was confirmed after he was hospitalized in Sao Paulo in June for a serious intestinal blockage. He underwent surgery at that time and later returned to the area around Peixoto de Azevedo.

The institute said its immediate focus is ensuring Raoni remains comfortable, receives proper care, and stays near his family and community. It also asked the public to respect his privacy, his need for rest, and the decisions made by his relatives.

Raoni is widely recognized as one of the leading voices for Indigenous rights and the protection of the Amazon rainforest. For decades, he has traveled internationally to draw attention to environmental conservation and the rights of Indigenous peoples.

According to the institute, doctors chose palliative care because of Raoni’s advanced age, his broader health condition, and the significant risks linked to more aggressive cancer treatments.

The institute emphasized that palliative care still involves active medical support. Its aim is to manage pain and other symptoms, prevent complications, provide nutrition and hydration, and ensure access to medical supervision, nursing care, physical therapy, and the highest possible quality of life.

Raoni is now resting at home with family members, community representatives, and specialized health professionals. His care plan also includes spiritual and intercultural support, allowing traditional healers to work alongside medical staff in a way that respects his Indigenous heritage.
