Imran Tahir: Embracing Leadership at 47 in World Cricket

Imran Tahir’s celebrations have become a beloved tradition in Guyana, but at 47, he remains aware that a few poor performances could invite scrutiny. “Traversing various islands and engaging with diverse cultures has been an incredible journey,” Tahir shared ahead of Amazon Warriors’ match against Antigua & Barbuda Falcons in Qualifier 1. He expressed gratitude to Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali and GAW owner Dr. Ramroop, emphasizing the challenges of franchise cricket, where negativity can quickly take hold. “A couple of subpar games might prompt questions, especially for someone like me, who’s likely the oldest active player in world cricket.” While acknowledging the playful jabs about his age, Tahir finds motivation in pushing himself harder annually. “I’m deeply appreciative of the CPL’s opportunity and committed to helping our team win this year—I believe we truly deserve it.”

During Sunday’s game against Barbados Tridents, Tahir made history as the first overseas player to reach 100 CPL appearances. He is now two wickets ahead of Sunil Narine in the franchise’s all-time records. Despite representing nearly 60 teams globally, Tahir has remained steadfast with Amazon Warriors since joining in 2019. The support from fans over eight seasons fuels his desire to repay Guyana’s passion. “Seeing the entire country rally behind us is extraordinary,” Tahir noted. “Every street in Guyana buzzes with cricket talk. When people show such respect—from children on the road to professionals—it gives me the courage to perform for my nation. As captain, I aim to instill that same pride in my teammates.”

The road has tested him, with separations from family and constant travel, but Tahir insists their dedication is unwavering. “We’re here to deliver for Guyana and honor our brand with honesty and commitment.” Before leading Amazon Warriors in 2023, Tahir captained Pakistan once in 2006—a role he accepted reluctantly. “I love challenges,” he said. “When the owner asked if I’d take the captaincy, I replied, ‘Sir, give me this chance, and I’ll give everything to the team.’ It hasn’t been easy balancing leadership beyond cricket, but I’m learning and hope to justify this role for Guyana Amazon Warriors and its supporters.”
