The Seattle Kraken have officially announced the latest additions to their leadership group, naming defensemen Vince Dunn and Brandon Montour as alternate captains for the upcoming season. Both players will now proudly display the coveted “A” on their jerseys, solidifying their roles as key voices within the organization.
Captain Jordan Eberle will continue to lead the team, supported once again by alternate captains Matty Beniers and Adam Larsson. The trio helped guide the Kraken through a pivotal period last season following the mid-season departure of Yanni Gourde, who was traded during the 2024-25 campaign.
With Jaden Schwartz remaining an alternate captain and Gourde’s exit leaving a void, the Kraken moved decisively to fill two open spots on their leadership council. In doing so, they elevated two players who have both made significant impacts since joining the team.
Dunn, in particular, represents a homegrown leader. Selected by the Kraken in the expansion draft from the St. Louis Blues, he has been with the franchise since its inaugural season. Over five campaigns in Seattle, Dunn has appeared in 356 games and accumulated 228 points — ranking third on the franchise’s all-time scoring list despite being a defenseman. His consistent offensive contributions and steady presence have made him an indispensable figure in the Kraken’s defensive corps.
Paired regularly with Adam Larsson, Dunn anchors the team’s top defensive pair. The duo has formed one of the most reliable shutdown units in the NHL over recent seasons, combining defensive responsibility with puck-moving flair. Their continued partnership ensures that Seattle’s leadership remains both experienced and cohesive.
Montour, meanwhile, brings veteran savvy to the leadership role. Acquired via free agency on July 1, 2024, he signed a seven-year deal aimed at adding depth and durability to the blue line. In just two seasons, he has played 145 games and contributed 73 points, proving to be a seamless fit in Seattle’s system.
While Montour primarily mans the second or third defensive pairings, his influence extends beyond statistics. Known for mentoring younger teammates like Ryker Evans and Josh Mahura, he has played a vital role in developing the team’s emerging talent. His leadership style — calm, consistent, and encouraging — aligns perfectly with the culture the Kraken are building.
Both Dunn and Montour exemplify the blend of performance and character the Kraken seek to cultivate. By entrusting them with alternate captain duties, the organization underscores its commitment to internal growth and accountability.
With their leadership structure now firmly established, the Kraken are turning their focus toward the 2026-27 season. Training camp kicks off this week, leading up to their first preseason test against the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, Sept. 20. The regular season opener comes shortly after, on Oct. 1, when Seattle travels to face the Calgary Flames.
