Two weeks after North Carolina general manager Michael Lombardi unexpectedly stepped down amid an investigation into allegations concerning his conduct while leading the Tar Heels, North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has announced his resignation.

Though on medical leave since August 6, no official details regarding the underlying health issue were disclosed publicly.
In the span leading up to Lombardi’s departure, WRAL reported that probes have shifted to scrutinize Belichick as well. Witness testimonies are now examining whether Steve Belichick “used drugs on the job or provided substances to players.”>
Bill Belichick initially expressed ambition during his appointment that he wanted to outline a succession framework positioning Steve Belichick to succeed him following Bill’s retirement. Standard contracts nonetheless lacked built-in language to accommodate such a transition, and the team’s disappointing 2025 performance cast significant doubt on the prospect.
That path remains uncertain. While the move outright will not occur, the organization may seek an alternative clearance mechanism. With UNC currently sitting 2-0, reports suggest departmental leadership is considering a for-cause termination option that could void any remaining buyout benefits.
