Tencent Holdings launched TenPayGo on Thursday, a mobile payment application designed for foreign visitors, as the company aims to capitalize on China’s expanding inbound tourism market ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen.
Built by Tencent’s WeChat Pay division, TenPayGo enables international travelers to pay at tens of millions of merchants, restaurants, and attractions across the WeChat Pay network by linking their credit cards or domestic digital wallets, according to a Thursday company announcement.
The application supports seven international card networks, including Visa and Mastercard, alongside approximately 60 overseas digital wallets, with Starryblu from Singapore among the initial partners.
Previously available in limited test versions on Apple’s App Store and Google Play, the app requires only an email address for registration, simplifying the onboarding process for overseas travelers compared to many Chinese apps that mandate local phone numbers.
